Tapping into interior design advice

Interior designers are your key source of ideas and advice when organising a property renovation.

They will examine spatial issues, recommend design and building improvements and work closely with your architect and other tradespeople.

They should have a good understanding of building regulations and may also have access to trade discounts.

Interior designers can provide decorating and styling advice, offering assistance to find the best fixtures and fittings to suit your space.

Renovating even just one room of your home can be stressful and expensive, so ensure you fully trust and respect the interior designer you engage.

Ask friends, family members and colleagues who have renovated for recommendations, or if you’ve recently purchased the property, your sales agent may be able to help.

You could also check the Design Institute of Australia website for leads in your local area.

Shortlisting

Once you’ve narrowed down your search, examine the websites of any preferred designers you have shortlisted.

But remember, you will have a close relationship with your designer so it’s important to meet face-to-face before hiring one. Don’t be afraid to vet a few designers, asking for examples of their experience and testimonials from previous clients.

Before meeting them, know your preferred budget and timeline. Give them a full list of what you want, including photos, so they understand exactly what you need.

Costs

Also question them about their costs and be prepared to negotiate. The amount you pay  will vary greatly and may be charged differently between interior designers.  It will largely depend on the scope and style of the work you want completed, your timeline and budget.

Some interior designers will charge by the hour; others will ask for a flat fee or require a retainer fee; while others will forward a percentage, or portion, of trade discounts onto clients as part of their final fee.

Ensure every detail of these fees is discussed openly before any work begins, including payment deadlines, and make sure you have a contract you examine carefully before signing.

Yasas Gamage

Ben, Peter and Jade. You guys are the most awesome Real Estate Agents we have ever met. We went to hundreds of open homes and met many agents throughout our search for a home, yet we would come back to you straight away for our next house. Thank you!

Jaan Turia

Ben worked exceptionally hard on our behalf to get the sale over the line. Ours was not straightforward by any means, and Ben navigated through the many twists and turns to ensure a very satisfactory outcome for us. We highly recommend Ben. 🙂

Carla Shields

Ben and the team did an amazing job selling our house. They know the market so well and gave us the best advice throughout the whole process. We have used them before and so glad we choose to use them again. Highly recommended.

Alex Hewton – Malins

This is the second time we have sold with Ben and both times the result has been outstanding. On a personal level we click and its clear he actually cares about both the sellers and the buyers he is working with. The result we achieved and the sheer quantity of offers received in a dead market shows what an outstanding salesman and marketer Ben (and is his team) is.

Ben was extremely easy to talk to and very informative about how things would progress. He listened to us and advised us about the right way to go. We are very happy with his pleasant and professional manner.

Jason Pepping

Ben is a very personable agent. He has excellent communication and was usually available to answer any questions we had, regardless of the hour!
