Five reasons why tiny homes are big news

So-called “tiny homes” are quickly becoming a feature of our real estate scene.

Whether you’re determined to reduce your environmental footprint on the planet or you’ve decided it’s a great way to jump on the property ladder, tiny homes have drawn a lot of interest from first-time buyers and downsizers.

It’s also caught the attention of homeowners on the edges of metropolitan areas who see a tiny home as a solution to either helping their parents downsize or providing their young adult children with some independence.

Already, we’ve seen councils refuse to accept makeshift homes on existing properties. Caravans, shipping containers, converted trucks and the like won’t necessarily cut the mustard. However, a properly constructed tiny home makes the grade if you have sufficient land and it’s not intrusive on your neighbours.

Second dwellings will add significant value to your property when the time comes to sell. And while they’re inexpensive compared with conventional properties, they’re not cheap.

Beyond doubt, you’ll use fewer resources for heating and cooling. That’s excellent news if you’ve offered to pay the energy bills for whoever occupies the tiny home. 

Financial freedom

For first-home buyers, a tiny home can get you on the property ladder while easing your mortgage burden. You need to consider whether it is going to be a sound investment. The resale value of these types of homes is not established yet.

On the move

Many of the tiny homes on the market can be picked up and taken away. So, if your circumstances change, you can still move home while ensuring the in-laws or your grandmother doesn’t lose theirs!
